The Centre for Migrant Workers Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) is looking for your help. Since 2020, our organization known previously as No One is Illegal-Nova Scotia, has been working with and advocating for the rights of migrant workers.
Many migrant workers come to live and work in the province year after year, yet most are unable to access permanent residence. Due to temporary immigration status and ‘closed’ work permits, tying them to a specific employer, migrant workers are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. We regularly receive reports of employment-related abuse from migrant workers throughout the province.
As the province’s first and only migrant worker centered organization, we are working to change these unjust conditions. We empower migrant workers to know and exercise their rights, and provide support in situations of abuse. We work with migrant leaders to advocate for better working conditions and equitable healthcare policies.
Since 2021, we have reached over 6,000 migrant workers through support services, outreach, community events and rights-based education. Migrant workers regularly tell us that for the first time in their many years working here, they feel like there’s an organization looking out for them. While our work initially began with migrant workers in the agriculture and seafood sectors, we are increasingly receiving requests for support from migrant workers in other industries.
Unfortunately, just as migrant workers are starting to arrive in the province for the new season, we are facing a funding shortfall. We are launching a renewed funding campaign to urgently call on support to help us continue this critical work. Can we count on you?
