migrants in our communities are making emergency requests for support. mutual aid is our response.

We launched the Migrant Solidarity Fund in September 2020. Since then, we’ve been able to engage in mutual aid with migrant community-members, many of whom face barriers in accessing basic rights and essential services like healthcare, worker protections and pandemic-supports. Although the Solidarity Fund has never been in a “cushy” state, we managed to keep it afloat with limited crowdfunding and generous one-off donations… But after responding to a series of emergency requests throughout this spring and summer 2021, our account balance dropped to $0. 

This means that, at this moment, we are unable to respond to emergency financial requests from migrants we’re in community and relationship with. We hate being in this position, so our Fundraising Working-Group scrambled to launch this call for support. Right now, your help is essential.

At the core of our approaches to organizing the Migrant Solidarity Fund, we recognize that responding to migrants’ immediate material needs is essential… But we also know it’s not the sole and only work we must be engaged in. We believe that mutual aid must also include collective-struggle for systems-change... And we do so by advocating for full & permanent immigration status for all, and an end to all oppressive beasts like colonization, border imperialism and racial-capitalism that attempt to remove the agency and dignity of migrants. 

We’re not surprised to see an increase in requests for support, especially during an ongoing pandemic and at a time where we have been extensively increasing our capacities for outreach and direct-support across Nova Scotia. To continue this work, we need your help.
