We are excited to have Gabriel Allahdua, author of the recently published memoir "Harvesting Freedom: The Life of a Migrant Worker in Canada," in Halifax. Gabriel will be in conversation with migrant leader and cancer survivor Kerian Burnett.
Gabriel Allahdua is a former migrant farm worker from St Lucia, an island in the Eastern Caribbean. He has been an organizer with the collective, Justice for Migrant Workers (J4MW) for almost a decade. He was Activist in Residence (AIR) at the University of Guelph, the first person to hold that position, which brought activists and researchers together. He is currently an Outreach Worker working with migrant workers across Ontario.
Kerian Burnett is a mother of six and grandmother of two. In 2022, she left her home in Jamaica to come work on a strawberry farm in Nova Scotia. While working here, she received the devastating news of a cancer diagnosis. Together with No one is illegal – Nova Scotia, Kerian has advocated for access to public healthcare coverage (MSI) for all migrant workers in Nova Scotia. She was ultimately successful in her application for federal healthcare coverage through the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). You can hear more about Kerian’s story here: https://youtu.be/pe1jtNSQcgI?si=wf1mX2bSTvD8w965
Light refreshments will be provided by the Loaded Ladle. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
The event brought to you by No one is illegal – Nova Scotia with support from the Atlantic Region Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies (ARAISA), Social Justice & Community Studies (SMU) and KAIROS Halifax.
