NOII-Hfx is hiring: Logistics and Service Access Coordinator (Migrant Workers Program)

No One Is Illegal-Halifax/Kjipuktuk (NOII-Hfx) is excited to announce that we are seeking a Logistics and Service Access Coordinator to amplify our mutual aid work in support of migrant workers. This full-time job opportunity (35 hours/week) runs from early May to September 30, 2022.

NOII-Hfx Migrant Workers Program engages in outreach, direct support, public education, and advocacy, in solidarity with migrant workers throughout Nova Scotia. Last year, we reached over 1,300 migrant workers across the province. We are excited to bring a Logistics and Service Access Coordinator onboard to help our team amplify and expand this work!

Job description: Logistics and Service Access Coordinator, NOII-Hfx Migrant Workers Program (35 hours / week)

The Logistics and Service Access Coordinator will be a key member of the Migrant Workers Program team, working alongside other NOII-Hfx staff members and volunteers. The ideal candidate is bilingual in Spanish/English. The candidate may be based in Halifax/Kjipuktuk or the Annapolis Valley region. The role entails a combination of online work as well as in-person coordination and travel throughout NS. Please note: A driver's license is required. Access to a car is an asset. 

NOII-Hfx’s work takes a migrant-centered approach. Support through the Migrant Workers Program (MWP) is provided in the spirit of mutual aid and solidarity. Importantly, our services are free and confidential.

Coordination of access to services / Support work (40%)

  • Coordinate access to services for migrant workers as requested including healthcare (ie. hospital visits, vaccine appointments), emergency housing, legal support, etc. This may include driving migrant workers, accompanying them physically, interpretation support (Spanish/English) or coordinating volunteers to do so. 

  • Provide individualized support to migrant workers, including organizing and preparing applications such as Vulnerable Worker Open Work Permits for migrant workers in situations of abuse, supporting them to fill out Labour Standards complaints, workers compensation reports, health insurance claims, applications for income benefits, etc. 

Coordination of food support (20%) 

  • Coordinate food support for migrant workers in need throughout Nova Scotia. This includes establishing partnerships (ie. for in-kind donations), planning, budgeting, procurement, packing, volunteer coordination, transportation/delivery, tracking (ie. inventory, results), etc. 

General program support (30%)

  • Support MWP team with the planning and implementation of community events and workshops for migrant workers, including taking a lead in creating promotional materials, tech support, etc. 

  • Support MWP team in other aspects of Migrant Workers Program, as time permits, for example, volunteer coordination, capacity building for volunteers, creation/translation of resources for migrant workers (Spanish/English), outreach to migrant workers and community organizations, research, communications, advocacy, etc. 

  • Work in collaboration with and provide regular updates to NOII-Hfx members, staff and the Advisory Committee.

Administrative tasks (10%)

  • Keep track of work hours

  • Manage budget for areas of responsibility 

  • Submit expense forms in a timely manner 

  • Project tracking and report writing

Qualifications & Relevant Experience 

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is strongly preferred

  • Driver’s license is required. Access to a car is an asset 

  • Knowledge of immigration system through studies or lived experience is strongly desired 

  • Previous experience working with marginalized communities, including immigrants, racialized people, people with low literacy, etc. is strongly desired. Knowledge and experience working with migrant workers would be an asset

  • Previous experience in labour organizing, food justice, mutual aid or related social justice movements and/or groups operating from an anti-oppression and solidarity framework is strongly desired

  • Previous experience in direct support roles, including supporting people in filling out applications, accompanying them with processes noted in the job posting, etc.   

  • Experience in coordination of logistics and projects, particularly emergency and/or food programs 

  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and take initiative 

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills  

  • Experience working with volunteer based teams and skilled in volunteer recruitment and coordination

  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate using different platforms and programs, including WhatsApp, Google Workspace, etc.

  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team 

  • Strong budgeting and data management skills, including ability to use spreadsheet applications such as Excel

  • Tech skills for livestreaming would be an asset 

  • Graphic design skills would be an asset 

Conditions of employment:

  • Contract from early May to September 30, 2022 for 35 hours/week at a rate of $26/hour. 

  • The Logistics and Service Access Coordinator will work under the supervision and direction of the Project Manager

  • This position requires flexible work hours based on Program needs, as well as regular work during evenings and weekends to accommodate migrant worker schedules.
