The Centre for Migrant Worker Rights Nova Scotia (CMWR NS) is a community-based organization which engages in support services, outreach, community-building and rights-based education to advance migrant worker rights, equality and well-being in Nova Scotia. CMWR-NS’ vision is for equality and the fair treatment of migrant workers in Nova Scotia. Job Description: Coordinator, Annapolis Valley Migrant Solidarity Network (AVMSN) (20 hours/week) 

We are seeking a Coordinator for our Annapolis Valley Migrant Solidarity Network (AVMSN) who will join our team from August to December 2024. The Coordinator will help us build and grow a community-based network to welcome and engage in solidarity with migrant workers in the Annapolis Valley. The candidate can be based anywhere in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.  

Educational Programming: 

  • Developing, promoting and delivering popular education workshops, trainings, and learning sessions to the Nova Scotian community, including migrant workers, focused on empowerment, bridge building, and solidarity

Volunteer and Community Engagement: 

  • Recruiting, training and coordinating AVMSN volunteers, as well as developing and/or updating online tools for volunteer engagement 

  • Conducting outreach activities to reach and share information with migrant workers

  • Developing and/or strengthening partnerships with groups and organizations in the region

  • Supporting the planning and implementation of potential community-based mutual aid, solidarity and/or bridge-building initiatives. This may include social activities, public education campaigns and coordinating responses to support requests from migrant workers in the region. 

General program support:

  • Working in collaboration with and provide regular updates to CMWR NS members and staff

  • Supporting the CMWR NS team with other tasks as time permits 

Administrative tasks: 

  • Keep track of work hours

  • Manage budget for areas of responsibility 

  • Submit expense forms in a timely manner 

  • Project tracking and report writing

Qualifications & relevant experience: 

  • Previous experience developing and delivering educational programming for adults, preferably through a popular education model   

  • Previous experience working with volunteer-based teams and skilled in volunteer recruitment and coordination

  • Previous experience working with marginalized communities, for example, migrants, racialized people, people with low literacy, etc.   

  • Previous experience in developing successful partnerships 

  • Previous experience in social justice organizations or groups operating from an anti-oppression and solidarity or mutual aid framework  

  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and take initiative 

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills  

  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate using different platforms and programs, including WhatsApp, Google Workspace, etc.

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team 

  • A driver's license is a requirement. Preference will be given to candidates who have access to a car  

  • Priority will be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English

  • Knowledge of the immigration system and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program through studies or lived experience is an asset 

  • Graphic design skills and experience updating websites is an asset 

Conditions of employment:

  • Contract from August to December 2024 for 20 hours/week at a rate of $26/hour

  • The Coordinator will work under the supervision and direction of CMWR NS’ Executive Director

  • This position requires a combination of remote and in-person work 

  • This position requires flexible work hours, as well as regular work during evenings and weekends to accommodate migrant worker schedules
